Dusty Rhodes was one of the most beloved wrestlers in WWE history. His charisma, wit, and passion made him a fan favorite for decades. This article takes a look back at his career and legacy.

Early Life

Dusty Rhodes was born Virgil Riley Runnels, Jr. in Austin, Texas, on October 11, 1945. He grew up in a poor family and began wrestling at a young age. Rhodes was a natural athlete and quickly rose through the ranks, winning several regional championships.

In 1974, Rhodes signed with the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). He quickly became one of the most popular wrestlers in the company, thanks to his charisma and in-ring skills. Rhodes was known for his signature move, the "Dusty Finish," in which he would win a match by getting himself disqualified.

The American Dream

In 1985, Rhodes left the WWF and joined Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP). He quickly became one of the top stars in the company and was given the nickname "The American Dream." Rhodes was a fan favorite and was known for his passionate promos and exciting matches.

Rhodes' most famous feud was with Ric Flair. The two men had a long and bitter rivalry that culminated in a series of matches at the Great American Bash in 1986. Rhodes won the first match, but Flair won the second two matches and retained the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

Later Career

Rhodes left JCP in 1989 and returned to the WWF. He was still a popular wrestler, but he was never able to reach the same heights as he did in the 1980s. Rhodes retired from wrestling in 1993.

Rhodes was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007. He passed away in 2015 at the age of 69.

Legacy

Dusty Rhodes was one of the most influential wrestlers of all time. His charisma, wit, and passion made him a fan favorite for decades. Rhodes was also a pioneer in the business and helped to break down racial barriers in wrestling.

Rhodes' legacy lives on through his son, Cody Rhodes, who is also a successful wrestler. Cody Rhodes has won several championships in WWE and is one of the most popular wrestlers in the company today.

Dusty Rhodes was a true American Dream. He overcame poverty and prejudice to become one of the most successful wrestlers in history. Rhodes was a beloved wrestler and his legacy will continue to inspire fans for years to come.
